Hippotherapy: When an Occupational, Physical or Speech Therapist provides treatment sessions utilizing the horse's movement as part the treatment strategy, this is Hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is highly effective for addressing issues associated with diagnoses including Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Down’s Syndrome, Parkinson’s Disease, Psychiatric disorders, and genetic disorders to name a few. While the session will be fun, and riding skills may be acquired, an emphasis is placed on addressing specific functional deficits, and are outcome driven.
The horse's unique movement promotes improvement in balance, strength, coordination, motor planning, sensory organization, and psychological and emotional in a highly integrated dynamic approach in a sensory rich environment unmatched in a traditional clinical setting.
Functional tasks are embedded into the sessions, including fine and gross motor function, problem solving, sequencing, social skill and functional communication.
Hippotherapy must be provided by a licensed therapist. Documentation is provided upon that may be submitted to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. See the forms and application for additional details.
